Influence of Five Additives on No Loading Swelling Potential of Red Clay

In this study, cement, zeolite powder and three industrial by-products (blast furnace slag, steel fly ash) were selected as additives to study their effects on the swelling potential of red clay with different curing ages dosages. At same time, mechanism reducing was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) X-ray fluorescence (XRF) tests. The diffraction (XRD) test used detect mineral content specimens before after modification determine change in specimens. direct shear explore influence strength clay. results show that 9% cement content, no loading can be reduced 82.5% under 28 days curing, cohesion greatly increased 82%. However, have an increase condition curing. contrast, when slag is additive modify properties clay, without but addition will reduce cohesive XRD testing shows composition cement-modified slag-modified experienced a relative change, montmorillonite illite decreased, kaolinite increased. Combined SEM XRF results, it concluded cement’s reduction depends pozzolanic reaction products filling pores bonding particles, so permeability resistance during swelling. also convert hydrophilic minerals into nonhydrophilic minerals. Compared caused mainly adsorption ions water molecules surface slices.
